Public Health Careers

Those who pursue careers in public health work in many capacities. Public health nurses, dental hygienists, dietitians and nutritionists, veterinarians, and social workers are just a few career paths that you might not initially think are public health. While a nurse who works in a doctor’s office may not necessarily be practicing public health, a nurse who travels to developing nations to help administer vaccinations or contain a disease outbreak is a public health worker.

The truth is, there are no clearly delineated “public health jobs”: a Masters in Public Healthcan prepare you for a variety of different careers. People involved in the improvement of health and quality of life in whatever capacity are involved in public health. Promoting hand washing to prevent the spread of contagious diseases is an example, as is the delivery of vaccinations and the administration of STD testing. Distributing condoms and emphasizing safe sex practices, and even encouraging people to recycle, save energy, and reduce pollution are also examples. Some of the more “typical” public health careers include health inspectors, public health lawyers, environmental health officers, sociologists, community development workers, and insurance personnel. Nowadays, an effective public health approach usually requires a multidisciplinary team of professionals from various backgrounds.
