Public Health Certificate Programs

An increasing number of employers are requiring a credential or certification for positions in public health. Some schools of public health offer programs that target public health certification and credentials. These are a few of the leading programs.

Public Health Credential Programs

UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. For MPH students who are interested in careers in health promotion and education, the UCLA Field School of Public Health offers a CHES certificate program that prepares students for the CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist) exam. The CEPH-accredited program includes 12 units of coursework within the health education and promotion cluster; these courses meet the CHES exam requirements.

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The Bloomberg School of Public Health offers a variety of public health certificate programs that focus academic training in areas of public health specialization. These programs are open to MPH students as well as mid-career professionals who want to gain additional knowledge and skills without enrolling in a degree program. An example of the certificate offerings is the Global Health Certificate. This program, which may be completed on site or online, provides the academic background needed to develop, evaluate and support primary healthcare programs in developing countries.

University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health. The UIC School of Public Health offers eight online programs for non-MPH students that lead to UIC public health certification. Students receive academic credit that may be applied to a degree they may decide to pursue later. One of these programs, the Certificate in Emergency Management and Continuity Planning, provides interdisciplinary training in analyzing the potential risks of natural and man-made disasters and developing response plans for public health emergencies, terrorist attacks and other disasters. Coursework in emergency management is useful for individuals who want to obtain CERC (Certified Emergency Response Coordinator) certification from the Public Health Practitioner Certification Board.

University of Michigan School of Public Health. Students enrolled in the doctoral and master’s in public health degree programs at the University of Michigan are eligible to earn a certificate in global health. Many students in the certificate program fulfill their degree internship requirement with an international internship. The UM School of Public Health offers more than $180,000 in scholarships for students who are placed in internships with public health institutes dedicated to global health.
