Public Health Today

Public health achievements are widely credited with the dramatic increase in the average person’s lifespan in the 20th century, and the decline of widespread infectious diseases. This is due, in part, to important technological advancements that have equipped us with the tools to monitor and control societal health: the development of vaccinations for polio, smallpox, yellow fever and others, the implementation of health and safety policies such as road traffic, occupational safety, sewage treatment, and water chlorination, and the increased communication and education of important health issues.

Threats to public health continue to arise on a daily basis, particularly in developing nations or those without widely disseminated health education. The HIV/AIDS pandemic, the increase of childhood obesity, and inequities in healthcare represent an ongoing battle. Global warming and natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, the earthquake in Haiti, or the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant disaster in Japan all have public health implications.

Fortunately, modern public health is aided by cutting-edge technology and well educated health professionals to combat these threats. Public health continues to expand as it examines new and broader determinants of health across entire populations and extends its reach to a global scale. If you are looking to impact society and make a difference, learning about the different issues, how to pursue an advanced degree, and where to find a job will help you master public health.
